SELF Magazine Lucy's Blog: Helmets!

I know that mine is like my best friend. I love to take risks in some areas: I surf, ski in backcountry (wearing a helmet) and I bomb downhill on my bike. But when people ask me if I'm scared on my scooter I say no, that I avoid the big trucks and buses, and I don't use it to commute in icy, snowy weather. I do love to scoot around, though, and other than the winter potholes and the cold hands (good gloves are the other thing to invest in), I love scooting past the lines of cars waiting for lights, the double-parked garbage trucks and the general backed-up traffic that can make getting around a long-suffering exercise in learning to breathe and be patient.

Scooting, for me, is freedom. I see the sky, feel the air, and love the idea that no one is waiting for me but my little black scooter. And my helmet. Which this month, Vespa is including in the deal if you buy a scooter. I highly recommend it as a way to get around. The best part? My whole entire cost for the week is one tank of gas. Which is a gallon. Or about $3. Try it. You just may fall in love.
